I then took a new path to become a therapist, career coach and writer. I myself chose to leave my corporate life forever after a brutal layoff (from my VP role) in the days following 9/11. Yet many thousands of women have said “ No, I don’t want to lean in,” especially if we define it as we have. From how I see “leaning in” being talked about in the media, in leadership circles, in corporate America, and in the thousands of articles and books I’ve read on success, people have come to associate “leaning in” with one thing – building successful, high-level corporate careers, pursuing corporate ambitions, and doing it in a way that fits into the existing corporate model. While I believe that, overall, this movement has brought to light critical issues that needed examination and exploration for women, I’ve seen a trend lately that is deeply worrying to me.
